I did a 'Clean Install' of the latest Adrenalin drivers which was successful, including the operation of the Radeon Settings interface and all of its sub-programs. Because some graphics monitoring software I depend on would not run with these new drivers, I decided to remove the new Adrenalin drivers and reinstall the older Crimson drivers. After the restoration of the old drivers the Radeon Settings interface would not run. Clicking on the icon in the system tray did nothing, not even log any errors. The only thing I noticed was that a new program cncmd.exe would run when I clicked on the Radeon Settings system tray icon. I did all the usual delete all the related software and reinstall, install a newer version, install an older version, copied all the software over from our backup machine. I even did a upgrade/reinstall of Windows. Nothing worked!
Checking the attributes of the Radeon Settings icon I found that is was pointing to the RadeonSettings.exe file in the C:\Program Files\AMD\CNext\CNext directrory. I went to that directory and clicked on RadeonSettings.exe and guess what? Same result, that is, no action. I went back to one of our backup Windows 7x64 systems, went to the same directory and tried the same thing. Surprise, surprise, I got the same result, nothing! But Radeon Settings was working perfectly on this system. That is when I discovered that C:\Program Files\AMD\CNext\CNext was an almost exact duplicate of C:\Program Files\AMD\CNext. I went back to the directory C:\Program Files\AMD\CNext and clicked on RadeonSettings.exe, and it ran perfectly! It seems that dependant on whether you are running or updateing Crimson or Adrenalin drivers the location of the RadeonSetting.exe file will change. With the ealier Crimson drivers it may be located in the C:\Program Files\AMD\CNext directory while with the later Adrenalin drivers it may be located in the C:\Program Files\AMD\CNext\CNext directory. If the directory C:\Program Files\AMD\CNext does not contain the files that are in the C:\Program Files\AMD\CNext\CNext directory, copy them to it. Now go to each directory and try to run RadeonSettings.exe by double clicking on it. If it runs, that is the directory you want to point the System Tray icon to.
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\StartCN For Example: From: "C:\Program Files\AMD\CNext\CNext\RadeonSettings.exe" atlogon (must have the quote marks) To: "C:\Program Files\AMD\CNext\RadeonSettings.exe" atlogon (must have the quote marks) (Note that the 'From' and 'To' may
be the other way around depending on what you installed last.)
After you make this change reboot your system for it to take effect.
A total clean up should involve a file by file deletion of everyting in the directory that RadeonSettings.exe would not run in and the deletion of all of the directory entries in the registry, of which there are many. For right now I am not going to go into the whys and hows the duplicate directories are created by the installers, I am just going to enjoy the fact that Radeon Settings is working as it should again and hope this works for you.
